It may be the most chilling indictment in all of Scripture:
Says the Lord… I looked for one [in Israel] who would build up the wall and stand in the breach before me on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one. (22:30)
The prophet Ezekiel declares God’s abiding sadness and impending judgment against Israel after generations of infidelity, immorality, and unethical and uncaring treatment of the downtrodden.
Wherever holiness and human sinfulness collide — which is everywhere humans can be found — God seeks those who will stand in that breach, willing to stand up for God’s righteousness and stand against worldly evil. Often, one stands alone.

It takes courage and conviction to stand in the breach… to stand up when most lay low…to think with a clear mind in the midst of a mindless mob… to speak the truth when false voices shout and clamor.
In communion with Christ and others, we can be the one God seeks in our time. As Jesus prays for disciples to come: May they all be one; as You, Father, are in me, and I in You, may they also be one in us: so the world may believe that You have sent me (John 17:20-21).
As the apostle Paul reminds the church in Rome: We, who are many, are one body in Christ.
God still seeks one, and in Jesus Christ, we can be that one… together.
